Notes:

2 July 1859 The crime that sent him to Saltley was reported in the Staffordshire Advertiser Saturday 2 July 1859 p.6 col.5: STEALING FROM THE PERSON AT BURTON. THOMAS LYONS, 13, hawker, was charged with having stolen from the person of Caroline Sldwell, at Burton-upon- Trent, the sum of 6s. - Mr. Young appeared for the prosecution. The prosecutrix was walking along High-street on the 20th April last, and she felt the prisoner's hand in her pocket. She immediately missed some money, about 6s.. and she apprehended the prisoner, there being no one near but a man who declined to assist her. The money was not found on the boy when searched. The prisoner, a precocious youth, cross- examined the prosecutrix and a witness whom she called; but he did not shake their testimony. He was found guilty, and sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment in the house of correction and to be sent to the reformatory at Saltley for two years
