Notes:

14 April 1855 A brief report in the Birmingham Journal Saturday 14 April 1855 p.6 col.3 says: William Barlow, gun barrel filer, for unlawfully breaking a certain machine, the property of Joseph Rock Cooper, his master, two months [in prison], and two years at the Saltley Reformatory School.
 
22 July 1856 In the Reformatory Minute Book it says: 288. Mr Ellis stated that the following boys were anxious to leave the Institution: W Barlow, S Garrett, S Booth, J Colby, S Burrows, and that the former would obtain a situation with his former master Mr Cooper, but the other boys would like to seek places.
 
289. Resolved: that Mr Cooper be requested to call upon Mr Yorke, and if the result of enquiries is satisfactory that an application be made to the Home Secretary for the discharge of William Barlow, and that an effort be made to obtain situations for the other boys.
