| 11 January 1902 The crime that sent him to Saltley was reported in the Staffordshire Advertiser Saturday 11 January 1902 p.7 col.3: ESCAPED FROM AN INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL. - Albert Shave, aged 14, and Arthur Murcutt. aged 13, were charged with stealing two loaves of bread, value 5d., belonging to Theophilus Beardmore, baker, Bright-street, Adderley Green, Longton. The boys absconded from Werrington Industrial School early on Monday morning after helping themselves to the remains of the Christmas fare. At Weston Coyney they stole two loaves from the prosecutor's bread-cart, and were handed over to the police. Mr. B. Horth (superintendent of the Industrial School) stated that the defendants were London boys. Shave absconded twice last year. The first time he escaped at midnight from the dormitory window, broke into a stores and stole a quantity of eatables, which were subsequently found buried in the garden. He had been the cause of several boys getting into trouble. Murcutt had previously borne an excellent character. Shave was sent to a reformatory, and Murcutt was sent back to school, after being cautioned by the stipendiary. | |
