| 18 January 1901 A previous offence was reported in the Northampton Mercury Friday 18 January 1901 p.6 col.4: Theft of a Purse. - John Eaves (12), errand boy, 39, Cloutsham-street, was charged with stealing from the person of Florence Lee, while in Balmoral- road, about 3 p.m. on the 12th inst., a purse containing 1s. 2d., and of the total value of 1s. 8d., the property of Abraham Lee, 111, Cecil-road. - The boy was ordered to receive three strokes with the birch-rod, and his father was warned to keep him out of bad company. | |
| 15 February 1901 The crime that sent him to Saltley was reported in the Northampton Mercury Friday 15 February 1901 p.6 col.4: Thefts by Schoolboys. - John Eaves (12), schoolboy, 39, Cloutsham-street, Northampton; Frederick Mayes (12), schoolboy, 65, Cloutsham-street, Northampton; and Walter Mayes, schoolboy, 65, Cloutsham-street, Northampton, were charged with stealing a boy's overcoat, the property of Charles Munton, from the lobby of St Sepulchre's Schools, Barrack-road, Northampton, between two p.m. and four p.m., on February 8th. The lad Munton, a schoolboy attending St. Sepulchre's Schools, said he hung the overcoat (produced) on the pegs in the lobby of the schools on Friday afternoon. - All three boys pleaded guilty, and all said they wished to be sent away. - The Chief Constable (Mr. F. H. Mardlin) said that Eaves was convicted last month for stealing a purse, and was imprisoned for one day and was whipped. Frederick Mayes had been before the Court three times previously: for damaging a tree, for breaking into a school, and for stealing laces from a warehouse; and Walter Mayes was also convicted for breaking into a school, he was connected with the stealing of the laces, and in January this year he was birched for stealing pork pies. - The Mayor said that the lads would be sent to a Reformatory. For the next ten days they would be sent to the Workhouse to give the Bench time to make proper arrangements. The length of time the lads would be detained in the Reformatory would announced ten days hence.
