| 26 May 1900 The crime that sent him to Saltley was reported in the Leicester Chronicle Saturday 26 May 1900 p.4 col.3: IMPUDENT FRAUDS BY A BOY. - Fredk. Harris, (12), schoolboy, Middleton-terrace, was charged with obtaining money by false pretences from various persons. - Sarah Ann Newbold, domestic servant to Miss Hirst, 1, Park-street, said that on May 10th the lad came to the door, and asked if Miss Hirst would please lend Mrs. Amatt sixpence. Witness gave the message to Miss Hirst, who sent sixpence, which witness gave to defendant. - Gertrude Amatt, wife of Mr. J. H. Amatt, of 3, Park-street, denied that she sent the defendant or anyone else to borrow sixpence from Miss Hirst. She was not at home on May 10. - Defendant pleaded guilty, and elected to be tried by the justices. - He was then charged with obtaining sixpence from Agnes Marston. on the 12th inst. - Prosecutrix, the wife of Thos. A. Marston, 117, Park-road, said that about 1.15 on the 12th the lad came to her house, and said, "Mrs. Chapman wishes to know if you will please lend her sixpence until dinner time." Prosecutrix asked if he meant Mrs. Chapman next door, and defendant said yes. She then gave him sixpence. - Mrs. Chapman said she did not send the boy for the money. That evening he came to her house, and asked her to lend 6d. to Mrs. Marston. Witness saw there was no light at the back of Mrs. Marston's, and the boy said they were at the front of the house. Witness told the boy to go to the front, and she would meet him there. She went, and found Mrs. Marston was out. The boy did not appear again. - The defendant pleaded guilty to this charge also. - The Deputy Chief Constable stated that there were ten other cases in which proceedings could be taken against the lad. - He was sent to gaol for ten days, to be followed by three years in a reformatory. | |
