| 24 May 1900 The crime that sent him to Saltley was reported in the Birmingham Daily Post Thursday 24 May 1900 p.5 col.8: SENT TO A REFORMATORY. - Yesterday, at Smethwick, Harold Harris (12), Great Bridge Street, Swan Village, was charged with attempting to break into a house at Smethwick on the 19th inst. He was without boots and in a dirty condition, and his father said he was unable to control him, although he had frequently thrashed him. He was in the habit of sleeping away from home. It happened that on the day named he obtained the key of a house in French Walls Row, and was in the act of trying to get into the premises when he was .caught. - The charge was reduced to one of being upon premises for an unlawful purpose, and accused was committed to the Saltley Reformatory until he attains the age of sixteen years. | |
