| 17 March 1900 The crime that sent him to Saltley was reported in the Staffordshire Sentinel Saturday 17 March 1900 p.6 col.3: YOUTHFUL THIEVES. - Before the Longton Bench, on Saturday. William Jervis (13). 4. Lower John-street and Stephen Lowe (15) Boundary-side, were charged with stealing, on March 9th, a woman's shawl, value 3s. 11d., from the shop of William Martin, draper, Stafford-street. The prisoners were arrested by P.C. Cooper and D.C. Alcock. A shop assistant saw the theft committed, and he ran after the lads, and found the shawl in the possession of Jervis. After hearing the evidence the magistrates committed Jervis to Werrington Industrial School until he was 16 years, and ordered Lowe to be detained at Saltley Reformatory for three years. | |
