| 21 March 1899 The crime that sent him to Saltley was briefly reported in the South Wales Echo Tuesday 21 March 1899 p.2 col.6: A MAGISTRATE AND THE SUNDAY SCHOOL, At Cardiff Police Court this morning (before Alderman R. Cory and Mr R. Benjamin) three lads - Lewis Baker (10), Edgar Griffiths (10), and Philip Groves (14) - were charged with stealing 10s from John Nelson on March 18th. The charge was proved, and Alderman Cory, addressing the parents and the boys, said it was a very sad case. He was inclined to think that some blame attached to the parents, for if they had taken their children to a place of worship and to a Sunday school he didn't think they would have got into this trouble. Griffiths was ordered to receive six strokes, and Groves and Baker were ordered to be sent to a reformatory school. | |
