| 29 January 1898 The crime that sent him to Saltley was reported in the Smethwick Telephone Saturday 29 January 1898 p.3 col.3: THE BOYS AND THE CONDENSED MILK. Isaac Pick (14), of 114, Price Street, and George Barnes (15), 9, Bampton Road, were charged with stealing a tin of condensed milk, value 3d., the property of Arthur Smith, grocer, of Bolham Road, Smethwick, on the 20th inst. - Prosecutor stated that the boys came into his shop to purchase some sweets. In reply to the charge, Barnes said "I took it: Pick opened it with a nail, we drank some and threw the other away." - Pick who had been convicted five times previously was not committed to gaol for fourteen days, to be followed by five years in a reformatory, but as it was Barnes' first offence his father was bound over to bring him up for judgment when called upon. | |
