| 17 May 1894 A previous offence was reported in the Burton Chronicle Thursday 17 May 1894 p.7 col.1: A PROMISING SCHOLAR. - Charles Lowe, schoolboy, Ordish Street, was charged with stealing 6s. from the shelf of his father on the the 2nd and 4th of May. - Selina Lowe, the wife of the prosecutor, stated that on Wednesday, May 2nd, she placed a florin on the mantel shelf of the room. Her son (the prisoner) was in the house at the time, She had occasion to leave the house for a short time, and when she returned both the money and prisoner were gone. - The Bench: Why did you put the money in such a place? - Witness: I had only just received it from my eldest son. - On the Friday following she placed a sum of money in a cupboard in the front room. There were three florins amongst it. She had to go to the back door to see someone, and on her way there prisoner passed her, went into the front room, took the money, and went straight off. On missing two two-shilling pieces she gave information to the police. - George Souter, a lad of twelve, residing in Dale Street, said about 1.30 on the 4th inst. prisoner came to him in Dale Street and said he had been on he Station Bridge three days and had earned 2s. He had some nuts and sweets, and some money in his hand. - Police-constable Smith proved arresting prisoner, and charging him with the theft. In reply to the first charge he said, "Yes: mother had some of that back again, and the rest I spent." On being charged with stealing the 4s. he replied "Yes: I did take it. I gave 2s. to George Souter, and I spent the rest." - Sentenced to receive six strokes with the birch rod. | |
| 15 October 1896 Another previous offence was reported in the Burton Chronicle Thursday 15 October 1896 p.7 col.1: OBSTRUCTIONISTS. - Alfred Harris, Fleet Street, and Charles Arthur Lowe, Ordish Street, were charged with causing an obstruction in High St., by means of a truck, on the 3rd instant. - Police- constable Duffy proved the case, stating that the defendants were in charge of an advertisement truck, which stood in High Street half-an-hour, defendants, who said they did not know the time, playing "tick" in the meantime. - Defendants were fined 1s. and 9s 6d. costs each, the Mayor remarking that future offences of the kind would be more severely dealt with. | |
