| 29 December 1893 There was a report of the crime in the Birmingham Daily Post Friday 29 December 1893 p.7 col.2: LONGTON. - JUVENILE SHOP-LIFTERS. - At yesterday's Borough Police Court, Joseph Malbon (13), Edward Wood (12), Enoch Warrilow (9), and Heber Parkes (8) were charged with stealing a watch, value £2. 5s., the property of Samuel Cartledge, clock and watch maker, High Street. - It was stated that the watch was stolen from the prosecutor's shop on the 6th inst., and, information having been given to the police, the theft was notified to the pawnbrokers. Subsequently an attempt was made bv William Davenhill to pledge the watch at the shop of Mr. Ambrose, and, upon being questioned, Davenhill stated that he had been sent with it by the father of the lad Edward Wood, and it was ascertained that the latter had bought the watch from his son for 9d. - Malbon, who had been twice previously corivicted, was sent to prison for fourteen days, and to a reformatory until he attains the age of sixteen years. Edward Wood was ordered to receive six strokes with a birch rod, and the other defendants three strokes each. - By the direction of the magistrates, Benjamin Wood, the father of the boy Wood, was charged with receiving the stolen watch, and was fined 20s. and costs. | |
