| 25 February 1893 A previous offence was reported in the Staffordshire Advertiser Saturday 25 February 1893 p.6 col.5: THEFTS BY JUVENILES. - Charles Satchwell, aged 9, Duke-street, and John Smith, aged 11, Foregate-street, were charged with stealing canes, value 1s 6d., and handkerchiefs, value 4d., the respective properties of Peter W. Jones, Eastgate-street, and William Beeston, Crabbery-street. The lads pleaded guilty to the thefts and it appeared from the evidence of Police-constable Peake that they had admitted being the authors of several other petty robberies In the town. The Bench ordered Smith to receive six strokes of the birch rod and Satchwell four. | |
| 4 November 1893 The crime that sent him to Saltley was reported in the Staffordshire Advertiser Saturday 4 November 1893 p.7 col.3: IMPUDENT THEFTS BY JUVENILES. - Frederick Charles Satchwell, aged 10, 3 Grey Friars-place; Thomas Emery, alias Thomas Smith, aged 12, Bell-entry; John Thomas Faulkner, aged 9, Backwalls South; John Cotton, aged 12, and Henry Cotton, aged 10, of 23, Grey Friars-place; and John Horne, aged 12, 10, Sash-street, were charged with stealing a quantity of cigarettes, tobacco pouches, pipes, cigar holders, &c. from a shop in Salter-street, occupied by Ada Vernon, between the 23rd and the 25th inst. The prosecutrix stated that during that period she missed the articles mentioned, and at various times had seen all the defendants in her shop. On each occasion they had asked her to give them an empty box or a piece of string. She became suspicious, and on the 25th inst., when two of them came in with a similar request, she detained them and sent for the police. Evidence having been given of the sale of the articles by the defendants, Police-constable Peake deposed to first arresting Satchwell, who made statements implicating the other defendants. The Bench decided to send Satchwell, who had been three times previously convicted, to the workhouse, prior to his being removed to a reformatory for five years. They ordered Smith to receive six strokes of the birch, and the other defendants four strokes each. Mr. Woodhouse severely warned all the lads as to the consequences of evil-doing on their part in future. | |
