| 17 September 1889 A previous offence was reported in the Staffordshire Sentinel Tuesday 17 September 1889 p.3 col.5: THEFT OF A SKIRT. - John Henry Lovatt and William Lovatt, two boys, brothers, living in Tunstall, were charged with stealing a skirt, valued 4s. 6d., belonging to Ambrose Allport, pawnbroker, Tunstall, on the 13th inst. The skirt was hanging up on Friday, and the younger lad, William Lovatt, was seen to take it away. When caught he said his brother told him to take it. - Police-constable Cadwallader had charge of the case. - The Stipendiary said it appeared to have been a case of offering temptation by hanging the skirt up so that a boy of nine years could take it away. - John Henry Lovatt was ordered to receive six strokes with a birch rod and the parents were bound over in £5 to bring up the other defendant for judgment when called upon. | |
