| 11 January 1889 The crime was reported in the Staffordshire Sentinel Friday 11 January 1889 p.3 col.7: BAD LADS. - Henry Thomas, twelve. 18, Park-passage; and John Thomas Whelan, eleven, 55, Bagnall-street, were charged with stealing about 1lb. of cooked beef and two rolls of bread, the properly of John Parkes, refreshment house keeper, Stafford-street, on the 9th. - The lads went into the shop while the proprietor was absent, got round the counter to the window, cut the beef, and took it off with them. They were arrested by P.C. Minshall, and pleaded guilty. - Several previous convictions for felony were recorded, and the Bench sentenced each to one month's imprisonment, to be followed by confinement in a reformatory until sixteen years of age. | |
