Circumstances of Death

Thomas died of wounds received in action on 27 June 1916. The war diary consisted of two very brief entries which are transcribed below. War DiaryB/151 June/1916 - in the Maricourt Valley. Wire cutting and general bombardment to prepare for infantry assualt from the 24th to 31st (sic) June. 27/6/1916 - 2 Lieut T.J. Weiss died of wounds received in action. Newspaper Obituary"ROLL OF HONOUR - The Rector [of Berkswell] writing in the Parish Magazine says : We have to record another killed in action from Berkswell, Lieut Thomas Weiss of Mount Pleasant. He received his commission early in the war [13 Oct 1914] and was Gazetted to the Artillery. He was serving with a Howitzer battery when he met his death. A quiet, retiring man, he was only known to his few particular friends, but by them he was esteemed for his generous nature and straightforward simplicity of life." - Thomas is also remembered in a plaque dedicated to him inside Berkswell Church (picture above)
- Thomas was a shareholder in the Great Western Railway
- We are unable to find Thomas in the 1911 Census. The London Gazette said he was Commissioned from the Officer Training Corps
and so may well have been at University
