END Stratford Herald ObituaryStratford on Avon Herald - Friday 18th May 1917 SOLDIER KILLED - information was received on Saturday afternoon by Mrs. Overbury, York House, Alcester, that her son, Private H. Overbury, D Company, 7th Buffs, had been killed on May 6th. The sad news was conveyed in a letter from Lieutenant H.S Watson who stated that it was with the deepest regret that he wrote of Private Overbury's death. He was killed instantaneously by a shell whilst on duty, and his loss was felt deeply by his comrades and the Lieutenant. The writer added that during the short time he had known Private Overbury he had found him always amongst the most cheerful, ever willing to do any work required under the most difficult circumstances. Private Overbury was the eldest of Mrs. Overbury's three sons serving in the forces before joining the Army he was a clerk in Lloyds Bank, Deritend, Birmingham and was very popular. He travelled daily from Alcester to Birmingham and was as highly esteemed as he was widely known. He was a native of Alcester and much sympathy is felt in the town for his widow mother in her sad bereavement. |
