Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

Harry is listed as dying of his wounds on 8 May 1916 at the 2nd Stationary Hospital in Abbeville.
 
The war diary for the 30 Apr 1916 is transcribed below and it can be seen that Harry was wounded in the thigh and arm on that day, the same day that local man Pioneer John Thornett was killed.

Mazingarbe 30/4/16: Wiring in front if front line practically completed. Work impeded by hostile machine gun fire. Hot day with east wind. No hostile attack. Sgt 12425 BAILEY H wounded (thigh & arm) 12424 JOINER W wounded (leg severe) Pnr 12207 SPENDER F wounded (back) PNR 12415 THORNETT J.E killed. END

Allen is listed as dying of his wounds on 12 Sep 1918, we are unable to verify the exact time and place that he was originally wounded as the war diary does not list any events with casualties. We do know that he died at the 42nd Casualty Clearing Station in Aubigny.

Circumstances of Death

Frank is listed as dying from wounds on 2 Oct 1918. His service record states that he suffered shrapnel wounds to legs, buttocks, foot and thigh and died at the 4th Canadian Casualty Clearing Station which was located in Agnes-les-Duisans.

108th Siege Battery became part of 78th Brigade Royal Garrison Artillery in February 1918 and remainded in 78th Brigade until the war ended. The Brigade War Diary for 2 Oct 1918 is Adminstrative and contains no information about Casualties or actions that they were involved in.

From the nature his wounds it can be safely assumed that he was hit by some sort of shell explosion.

Circumstances of Death

Francis is listed as being killed in action on 11 Jan 1917. The brief war diary entry for that day is transcribed below but it appears he was was killed by enemy shell fire hitting the Battalions trenches.

Trenches [at Heburrne] - Thur 11-1-17: C.O visited line in morning and again in afternoon. Enemy shelled front line, C.Ts. [Communication Trenches] & Hebuterne fairly heavily during morning.

Leave: 2nd Lieut J Davis and 4 OR proceeded on leave

Awards: 9297 J.W. Kimberley awarded D.C.M.

Casualties to 12 noon: 3 killed, 9 wounded.

Circumstances of Death

The pages of the online War diary are very blurred and difficult to read but we can see that on 24 Aug 1916, when William is listed as being killed, the 23rd Bn were in the line at Pozieres and came under numerous artillery barrages during the day and we assume that he was killed during one of these barrages.
