Francis is listed as being killed in action on 11 Jan 1917. The brief war diary entry for that day is transcribed below but it appears he was was killed by enemy shell fire hitting the Battalions trenches.
Trenches [at Heburrne] - Thur 11-1-17: C.O visited line in morning and again in afternoon. Enemy shelled front line, C.Ts. [Communication Trenches] & Hebuterne fairly heavily during morning.
Leave: 2nd Lieut J Davis and 4 OR proceeded on leave
Awards: 9297 J.W. Kimberley awarded D.C.M.
Casualties to 12 noon: 3 killed, 9 wounded.
