Military History

Hubert is listed as being killed in action on 18 Sep 1914. He was originally buried at Soissons Communal Cemetery before his remains were exhumed around 1920 and, having been identified by his uniform, he was reburied at Vaixbuin.

The 1st Battalion war diary does not list any deaths on the day he is said to have been killed nor on the day after, however in the period 13th to 17th it lists 11 other ranks as being killed. The battalion war diary entries for the period 13th to 18th Sept 1914 are transcribed below.

13^th to 17^th Sept - La Montagne Farm: Still occupying trenches at La Montagne Farm. During which time were more or less continuously under artillery fire & wet weather made the conditions in the trenches very trying. On the 16^th the enemy brought up his heavy guns (reported to be 8.5in mortar). These were used in conjunction with aircraft for observation with amazing accuracy and caused a good deal of loss in our trenches. On this date units from the 10^th Infantry Brigade were brought up into the firing line and two sections organised each consisting of units from both Brigades. The Hampshire Regt coming under command of Brig Gen Haldane Commanding 10^th Infantry Brigade.

11.30am till 1.30pm 17^th Sept: Bucy-le- Long heavily shelled by enemy’s heavy guns which caused considerable damage.

Casualties 13^th to 17^th:

Killed: Officers Nil and Other Ranks 11
Wounded: Capt Richards and Lieut H.C. Westmorland and 54 Other Ranks
All the above were caused by artillery fire.

18^th Sept - La Montagne Farm: Orders received to sort our the two Brigades 10^th Bde of the right as far as a point 150 yards west of La Montagne Farm. 11^th Bde thence to the left occupying a frontage of about 1500 yards with its left resting on the right of the 45^th French Division (African). The Bn was supposed as follows: 2 companies in fire trenches, 1 company in supporting trench and 1 Company held in  reserve in a conveniently situated cave.

Casualties: Wounded - Officers Nil & Other Ranks 1.

Military History

William is listed as being killed in action on 27 Aug 1917. The 1st/7th Battalion war diary entries for the 26th & 27th August are transcribed below:

St. Julien Sector Aug 26^th 1917: C & D Coys took up a position in rear of our post line during the night to be ready for an attack on Springfield Farm line in conjunction with 8^th Bn R War R and attacking battalions on right and left.

St. Julien Sector Aug 27^th 1917: Attack started at 2pm D Coy captured Springfield and handed it over to 8^th Bn Worcester Regt who relieved them. The details of A Coy & a portion of B Coy relieved from the line on 27^th by 8 R War R went by train to Poperinghe.

Poperinghe Aug 28^th 1917: C & D Coys rejoined remainder of Bn at Poperinghe.

Military History

Albert is listed as being killed in action on 9th October 1917. The brief 148th Company war diary entries for the 8th to 10th October are transcribed below and show that Albert was killed during an attack on Passchendaele Ridge.

Potijze - 8 Oct 1917: Proceeded to first assembly position at Potijze

Potijze - 9 Oct 1917: Attacked the Passchendaele Ridge, the Brigade with a two Battalion frontage. The 2nd & 3rd objectives on left Bn frontage being allotted to 1/5th K.O.Y.L.I [King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry].

Potijze - 10 Oct 1917: Relieved at night and bivouaced in Potijze Camp.

Military History

Frederick is listed as dying of wounds on 25th October 1918 at the 59th Casualty Clearing Station near Cambrai. The 12th/13th Battalion war diary shows that Frederick would have been wounded on the previous day, 24th October 1918, and the war diary entries for the periond 18th to 25th are transcribed below.

Walincourt – 21/10/18: Inspection of ammunition, rations, respirators, feet etc. Strength 39 Officers and 808 Other Ranks

Walincourt – 22/10/18: Battalion moved up to Inchy

Inchy - 23/10/18: Division attacked at 04.00 hours. The Battalion was moved from Inchy at 05.00 hours and went into Divisional Reserve west of Amerval. We followed up during the day as far as Vendegies.

Vendegies - 24/10/18: The Brigade attacked at 04.00 hrs. The Battalion passed through the 1^st Bn Lincolnshire Regt at 06.00 hours & continued the attack. The 64^th Brigade on our right being held up, C Coy on our right flank could not get forward.

Battalion attacked again at 16.00hrs & gained objective (X.11.a to X.17.d).

Casualties: 2/Lts B A Watson, O Tunnell & J Greenwick killed, 2/Lts Spooner, Chatt & Anderson wounded.

13 OR killed, 100 OR wounded & 30 OR missing.

Vendegies - 25/10/18: Brigade relieved by 110^th Brigade. The Battalion moved to sunken road at 3A & 2B.
