James is listed as dying of wounds on the 23 Oct 1917. We are not certain when he was wounded but from the war diary we believe he was on a working party on the 22 Oct when two Other Ranks were wounded. On 22nd October 1917 James was in the No 2 Casualty Clearing Station with gun shot wound to the head and a compound fracture of the arm. A medical report (see below) for that date reports a slight improvement in his Grave condition.
