John is listed as dying of wounds incurred in action on 25 Aug 1915 at the 13th Field Ambulance which was in Dernacourt at that time. The war diary for 25 Aug 1916 is transcribed below. Hop Alley - 25th Aug [1916]: Intermittent hostile shelling and sniping. Abpout 8pm we started a heavy bombardment some way to the south which gradually spread northwards. The enemy appeared nervous and opened a heavy bombardment on our trenches. The DLI relieved the 9th R B (Rifle Brigade). Killed Capt G. W. Bartholomew. Other Ranks 10 killed and 15 wounded. END |
