Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

On the 23 Aug 1918 the 12th battalion was ordered to attack and capture a line in enemy territory just west of Irles. The line is indicated on the map below. The attack with the battalion on the right of 95th Brigade, was delayed by the deep railway cutting, and now lagging behind the allied creeping artillery barrage, they came under close machine gun fire from the front and enfilade fire from the right, suffered heavy casualties and they were unable to advance beyond the ridge (120 line on map below) which overlooks Irles.

Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

John died of wounds incurred on 7 Aug 1917 near Wulverghem when supporting the 3rd Australian Division during the initial stages of the Battle of Passchendaele. He died on the 8 Aug 1917 but we have not yet been able to which medical unit he was treated at.

Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

Heber is listed as being killed in action on 27th June 1917.The 14th Battalion war diary entries for the 27th & 28th are transcribed below are self explanatory.

Trenches – Oppy – 27.6.1917: 13th Brigade relieved by 15th Brigade & 95th Brigade. The battalion is relieved by 1/Bedford Regt & 12/Gloucester Regt & on relief withdraws to Bow Huts. The Brigade being Divisional Reserve.

Pte’s G. Clements; H. Climer and F. Goldsmith all killed by shell fire.

Ecurie  – 28.6.1917: The 15th Brigade attack enemys front line trench from junction of Oppy Trench with Cardorna Trench, took the left, the junction of Fresnoy Trench with Arleaux Support. The 31st Division attacking Cardorna Trench on the right. The whole attack was quite successful all objectives being gained together with some 200 prisoners & a few machine guns.

Circumstances of Death

Harry is listed as being killed in action on the 24 May 1915 after the Battalion were ordered to support the Dublin Fusiliers near Shell Trap Farm. The battalion was diary for that day is transcribed below.

24th May 1915 - La Brique: Heavy rifle fire from the front at 3am. This was followed by Gas which reached us at 3.30. Regiment was ordered to stand to arms & put on respirators, these proved very effective in all cases where properly adjusted.

Wieljte Farm: Orders received to advance in support of Dublin Fusiliers towards Shell Trap Farm, part of the farm now being occupied by Germans. Under very heavy shell fire and gas shells Regt advanced to 1st Support Line trenches. A & B Coys were moved out to the left to get into a position behind Cross Road Farm ready to advance.

During this period a good deal of the front trench was occupied by Germans on both sides of the Farm and a further advance was impossible owing to machine gun fire. Orders were received to occupy and hold 1st Support Line trenches.

Casualties: Captain Sir. G Lacon wounded, 95 other ranks killed, wounded and missing.

Very hot day Colonel A.J. Poole took over command of the line from 2pm.

Harry's family History

Our research by Wendy Boland concludes that at some stage an S was added to the family surname of Hoskin:

  • Harry was born and baptised as Henry Charles HOSKIN - no S - in Sutton in 1885 (see Soliders Who Fell in Great War record)
  • His parents were Harry and Catherine
  • He had two sisters Ada May Louisa Hoskin and Catherine Elizabeth Hoskin (aka Kate E Hoskin) (see CWGC record)
  • We believe both parents died sometime between the 1891 census and 1893 when Harry was in Snitterfield School and that the three children had become orphans, were then adopted and lived in Snitterfield
  • We know from Snitterfield School records that Harry attended the school between the 1891 and 1901 census and that he had come from Epsom Union School (see Ancestry records).
  • We know from census records that both sisters at one stage lived in Snitterfield
  • Harry's CWGC record gives his parent as K E & H Hoskins - we believe the initials are switched and H is father Harry and the K E is either mother Catherine A or sister Kate Elizabeth.
  • Harry's Soliders Who Fell in Great War record records his residence as Uppingham and at that time his sister had married Charles Thorpe and was lived there as K E Thorpe. The witness to the marriage was Ada May Hoskins. See below and click for a copy of the 1891 census and the baptism records for all three Hoskin Children

Circumstances of Death

Aylmer was discharged on 17 Jul 1919 with Malaria which he contracted in Salonika which caused the consumption that he died from. He died on 17 Aug 1920 at 21 Victoria Street, Warwick.

Aylmer's death was reported in the Warwick Advertiser on 21st August 1920 as follows:

DEATH OF MR. AYLMER MONCK - We regret to announce the death of Mr. A.A. Monck of 27 Victoria Street which occured early on Wednesday morning after an illness extending over ten months. The late Mr. Monck, who was 26, enlisted for war service in 1914 [12 Aug 1914] being one of the first of Messrs Alfred Herberts apprentices to respond to Lord Kitcheners appeal for recruits, and was a Sapper in a Signal Co of the Royal Engineers.

He served in France, Belgium, Salonika, Egypt and Palestine and was in the Army of Occupation on the Rhine. While he was in Salonika he contracted malarial fever which brought on consumption from which he died.
