Circumstances of Death

William is listed as being killed in action on 18 May 1915. The 1st/7th Battalion War diary entry for that day is transcribed, in full, below and is self-explanatory

Steen Beck Trenches - Wulverghen - 18/5/15: Another wet and drizzly day. Trenches all very sloppy and miserable. This sort of weather interferes very much with the putting trenches in order, and the conveyance of necessary material to trenches.

2/Lt Large wounded by in neck by Rifle bullet. Pte Knowles shrapnel wound in head, Pte Sidwell "D" Coy killed by shell.

Had consultation with R.E. with a view to reducing the number of casualties in 72 & 73 trenches. Measures to be taken decided on and works commenced. B Gen [Brigadier General] compliments patrol of C Coy for bringing in the papers referred to in diary of 17th [Patrol found German propaganda Newspapers].

Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

The day before Alfred is recorded as being killed the battalion were engaged in two failed attempts to capture Pozieres after two bombardments failed to sufficiently deal with enemy barbed wire and machine gun post which caused great casualties and brought the attacks to a halt.

The day that Alfred is recorded as being killed the battalion were relieved in their positions by the 11th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. No mention is made of casualties however relief operations were dangerous and men were often killed and wounded during them.
