Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

Charles died of his wounds at the London Hospital, Whitechapel on 15 Jul 1915. He was originally admitted to a military medical unit on 12 May 1915 with a gunshot wound to the head. He was treated in at least three medical facilites in France and London. [National Archives Reference MH106/1598]

The war diary for 12 May 1915 is transcribed below:

May 12^th 1915: - More German patrols attempted to come up undercover of darkness but failed to do so leaving their dead behind them. Our new howitzers made very pretty practice on the enemy's trenches situated in dead man's bottom some 200 yards in our front. This drove the Germans out who then came under our rifle and machine gun fire and suffered accordingly. Our fire continues to dominate the German snipers many of whom we have picked off.

9.00pm: our left trench taken over by Somerset Yeomanry. The Company being relieved coming in close support behind the ? Which in reality is a fire trench. END

John is listed as dying of wounds (or being killed in action) on 16 July 1917 and he was buried at Coxyde Military Cemetery. The very brief war diary entries suggest he was wounded or killed on the 15th and the entries for the 14th to 17th are transcribed below.

Circumstances of Death

Rowland is listed as dying of wounds of 09 Jul 1917 and was buried at Canada Farm Cemetery which was used exclusively by the Canada Farm Dressing Station and so, given the normal Chain of Evacuation it is assumed he died on the same day that he was wounded.

The Battery War Diary does not mention, nor list casualties and so we cannot be certain as to the date that Rowland was wounded. The war diary for the period 3rd to 9th July 1917 is transcribed below.

3-7-17: Brigade moved to Englebelmer by Lorries

4-7-17: Brigade moved to Sarton area by Lorries

5-7-17: Brigade moved to Rebreuve area by Lorries

6-7-17: Left 20th Div artillery and came to Poperinghe area with orders to report to 14th ? attached to 38th Division Trench Mortars. Batteries posted to Group as follows: X/20 & Y/20 to left group. Z/20 to right group and V/20 to Heavy group. 20th D.T.M.O took command of the left group.

7-7-17: Line reconnoitered.

8-7-17: Batteries went into line as no accommodation was available in trenches. Batteries lived in Copse W of Canal.

9-7-17 to 14-7-17: Work on emplacements carried on. Ammunition carried up night & day during this period. END
