Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

Walter was wounded at some stage during the Battle of the Lys and died of those wounds at a Military Hospital in Wimereux. Military medal and bar awarded for Bravery in the Field and gazetted on 9 Jul 1917 and the bar on 14 Jan 1918.

Awarded on 9 Apr 1917 (Battle of Arras) "For gallant and distinguished services in the Field. I have it in command from the King to record His Majesty's high appreciation of the services rendered.".

Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

At 4 p.m. on March 28, 1918, eighty-eight men and three officers (Captain Edgar Ambrose Pengelly, Lieutenant William Norman Thomas, Second Lieutenant Claude Vivian Bisley) proceeded to the trenches east of Hamel. The Germans were sighted but were held up by a rearguard 800 yards from the trenches.
 
By the 29th, four men had been wounded, as heavy bombardment continued all day.
 
On the 30th, bombardment opened at day break and continued in intensity until 12 noon, when the barrage lifted and was followed by an attack in "mass". The Germans were held up by undamaged wire, along with machine gun and rifle fire. Twelve men and the Officer Commanding were wounded, in addition to eight men killed during this attack.
 
Although no further attacks took place the following day, Captain Edgar Ambrose Pengelly, Royal Engineers died from his wounds on Sunday, March 31, 1918, at the age of 36, the wounds sustained the previous day.

Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

On the 15th April 1918 the battalion where in the front lines at Hinges and were ordered to take part in an attack on Pacault Wood, in order to try and prevent the German's using the wood for gathering up for an attack under cover of the trees. The attack ultimately failed due to heavy casualties caused by a combination of the allies own artillery barrage falling short and then creeping over their own lines, an enemy counter barrage and enemy machine gun fire from the far end of wood. The war diary speaks of many acts of bravery by the officers and men but they suffered casualties of 7 officers and 225 other ranks being killed, missing or wounded, including Richard.
 
Also killed in this action were Arthur James Rathbone of Southam and Richard Bradburn of Tanworth in Arden

Circumstances of Death

Frank is listed as being killed in action on 27 Sep 1918. The war diary for that day is transcribed below along with an obitury from the Stratford on Avon Herald.

War Diary

Willerval Sector 26th Sep 1918: Capt W. Evans, MC joined Battalion. 2/Lieut P.A. Gaster joined Battalion. Lt A.C. Pearse MC rendered valuable service in laying the tape lines, and assisting assaulting Companies on to their assembly positions. The attack commenced at midnight.

Willerval Sector 27th Sep 1918: All objectives were gained, and some prisoners together with 5 enemy machine guns were captured. D Company suffered rather heavily from the enemy's barrage but succeeded in killing a large number of Germans with their rifles and bayonets. Capt A.H. Mackay commanding D Company greatly distinguished himself. By their magnificient fight the Battalion added yet more to the glorious traditions of the 77th.

Casualties: 2/Lieut H.C. Chinn; 2/Lieut R.S. Badcock wounded. 2/Lieut J. Green killed. 11 O.R killed in ac, 16 O.R missing, unaccounted for. About 38 O.R wounded.

Lieut Col E.E.F Baker MC returned from leave. END

Circumstances of Death

Frank is listed as being killed in action on 7 Dec 1917. The battalion war diary for the period 5 Dec to 8 Dec is transcribed below in its entirety.

5th - 7th Dec 1917 - Trenches in front of Passchendaele: On the night of the 5th/6th we relieved the 8th Bn in front of Passchendaele. 3 Coys in the front line and 1 in support. 33rd Div on the right, 7th Bn Rifle Brigade on the left. The relief and the whole tour were most unpleasant owing to heavy shell fire. A number of the HQ Officers and me suffered from some form of gas poisoning though it was not known how they got it and the symptoms only developed after relief [on night of 8th/9th].

A/Capt D Allhusen and 2/Lieut D Mackinge (later 8th London Regt) were wounded and the casualties among the other ranks were Killed 16; Wounded 33; Wounded and missing 1.

8th - 19th Dec 1917 - Trenches in front of Passchendaele: Bn was relieved night 8th/9th by 6th K.O.Y.L.I and moved to Brandhoek in divisional reserve and on the 19th to Junction Camp in Divisional Support
