Charles is listed as dying of wounds at 1.30pm on 16 Sep 1918 and was buried at Grevillers British Cemetery which at that time was used by the 34th, 49th and 56th Casualty Clearing Stations. As to the day that Charles was wounded the battalion war states that there were no casualties on the 16th and we have discounted that day along with the 11th; 12th;.13th & 14th when the diary records "Casualties - Nil" for each of those days A report in the Stratford Herald suggests that he was wounded on the 15th and when admitted to the Casualty Clearing Station he was unconscious and suffering from a severe head wound and does not appear to have recovered consciousness before he died. The war diary supports this and records casualties on the 15th as Wounded 1 OR and Wounded by Gas 3 OR. The diary entry states:- Reference Sheet 57C - 1918-Sep-15th - Front Lines: Front line Battalion occupies area from Q.16.c and Q.17.c to Q.22.c and Q.23.c. with B Coy on the right, C of the left, A in support and D Coy in reserve. 12 midnight: Readjustment complete, 1 Platoon of D Coy in support of C. Coy. Casualties Wounded 1 OR and Wounded by Gas 3 OR. END |
