A database from the Transcriptions of Memorials, Plaque and Rolls of Honour containing the names of the men and women of the SWFHS area who fell in WW1. By no means complete the database now contains 1804 records following the addition of the 45 men whose names are on the Warwick (King's) School memorial plaque and do not appear on other Warwick memorials. We are now moving onto the 69 men names on the main Bidford on Avon memorial.
Gaps in the data mean that we have yet to find that info. Click the last name for more details of the soldier. At the moment the database is only searchable by one field so we suggest either selecting All in the number of records for display then clicking the column header Last and then scroll down or search by last name.
Do you have photographs, documents or information about any of the men and women of South Warwickshire?, if you do we would be happy to received and publish them. Use our upload form by clicking here.

It is over five years since we set out to develop a website dedicated to the Southern part of Warwickshire where we shared a mutual interest. We did not wish to be involved in a Committee structure, neither were we particularly interested in financial gain; our aim was to contribute to the family history community, and to this end we became members of the Family History Federation..
Many family historians subscribe to the commercial sites where there is an abundance of information; many do not. For the latter group, we provide a means by which they can identify 'persons of interest' and then follow them up, via their local library, or through us. We answer every e-mail query, but do ask that you use this form so we can try to ensure you are not a robot. We will then do our best to help you move onwards with your searches. When we send you information, we do appreciate your replies, since it lets us know your searches have been successful... or not !
Up until now, we have concentrated on providing indices to the Church of England Parish register entries for the core period 1754 – 1916, progression is now being made to earlier records, and we index them whenever we find them. If you have access to any registers which have not been deposited at the Record Office, we would be very pleased to transcribe them and add them to our collection.
At times we have been severely challenged by the handwriting of some of our clerical friends ! We wish to extend our thanks to Familysearch, FreeBMD, FreeREG and the late Pickard Trepess (PPP) whose transcriptions are invaluable, and which have helped us to make sense of what we are seeing.
We have also been working on the Non Conformist registers; by definition, these are registers for churches and chapels outwith the Church of England. We include registers from Methodist (of all aspects), Baptist, Presbyterian, Quaker and Roman Catholic churches. Registers deposited within the Quaker group [RG8] contain entries for individuals who appear in more than one register. Some of the information is duplicated, some is not. Therefore, we have decided to include all the entries and we have recorded the appropriate reference number so that anyone interested in a particular surname, may view all of the information available.
Whilst transcribing the Non Conformist records, we have been aware of the mobility of Warwickshire residents, and therefore have decided to expand our searches to include areas outside that strictly defined as South Warwickshire, so as to capture these families who have 'strayed'. Included in this expansion are data from both Church of England and Non Conformist registers, in the hope that they will facilitate searches for your more mobile ancestors. For indexed entries which lie outside of the South Warwickshire area, you are advised to contact the local Family History Society who may be able to offer more detailed information, often through their own Bookshops.
Information within the Catholic registers has been particularly difficult to transcribe, partially because of illegible handwriting but mainly because the Priests have, on many occasions, attempted to record the names in a form of Latin. The use of 'us', 'is' and 'um' at the ends of what would otherwise be an English name, has caused confusion, as too has the use of a single Christian name, eg. Anna, which has been used for Annie, Anne, Ann, Hannah and Nelly. Maria also presents problems for the understanding of the child's name. On the whole, the surname is correct albeit often phonetic, but the Christian name must be viewed with caution. To try to resolve this problem, extensive use of the GRO Index registers has been used and names are presented in our Index in Anglicised form. There is much need for lateral thinking !
As we continue with the Parish Register transcriptions, we have also been developing our War Memorial investigations. Our webmaster has been very busy with the records and is continually expanding this section of the website, which now contains information on thousands of soldiers commemorated on War Memorials around the County. We have done extensive searches to identify those who died during conflicts abroad and have been listed on County War Memorials, but have been overlooked or mis-transcribed by many other official websites. We hope the Towns and Villages section of the website, together with the Parish Locations Maps, will be of particular help to those unfamiliar with the South Warwickshire area. Local knowledge is important to us; if you live in the area and have any additional comments to make, we would be pleased to hear them.
If you would be interested in joining our small transcription team, or have any information (documents & photographs of soldier casualties) to supplement our collection, we would be delighted to hear from you…please click here. We work with a small group of volunteers who help us with transcriptions; in particular Bob and Wendy. We would like to acknowledge their contributions which have had a significant effect upon the volume of transcription we have been able to achieve, and we would also like to thank Ian, in particular, for his help through his frequent visits to the Warwickshire Record Office. Financially, we are supporting the site, but if you would like to make a small donation towards the hosting costs, we would be very pleased to accept i
The site Menu will provide you with links to the numerous Parish baptismal, marriage and burial indices we have indexed, along with a Master Database for each series, and the commemorative pages built for each man or woman listed on all our local War Memorials. The work is on-going; please come back if your Parish does not appear on our list, since it will before too long.

Welcome to South Warwickshire Family History Society [SWFHS] ! Whilst the larger conurbations such as Coventry, Rugby and Nuneaton and the rural areas of North Warwickshire are well catered for by other family history societies, the southern areas of the County appear to have been largely ignored. Our aim is therefore to address this imbalance. The website is free to use and there are no committee nor meetings to attend. However if you would like more information on any of the individuals or parishes listed we will then do our best to help you.We are always interested in the donation of records, information, parish photographs (for which you own the copyright, or items are copyright free, or have Common Usage), the location of War Memorials and other such documentation, and we would be delighted to hear from you. Further, should you wish to join our transcription team, you would be made very welcome. |
Parish Register TranscriptionsThe Parish Registers we have, or are transcribing and making available as indices, essentially cover the period 1754 to 1910, although we do have entries before and after these core dates. The transcriptions are as accurate as we can make them, but we are aware of the problems caused by illegible handwriting, phonetic spellings, missing pages and non-deposited registers. We have used primary sources throughout, but we suggest that, should you identify an entry of interest, you confirm it by reference to the original records. We aim to aid your research, not mislead you; accuracy is everything. |
War Memorial TranscriptionsWe are also very interested in making available information about your ancestors who died or served in the numerous conflicts from Medieval times through to the present day, so together with a small group of keen transcribers, we will begin to present our collective data. It is our intention to research each man (and woman) recorded on a War Memorial in South Warwickshire, and present a page of all the data we have on him/her to date. There will be an opportunity to add to the page as and when further information comes to light. If you are able to identify any of these individuals and add further information, we would be very grateful to receive it. |

NOTES: 26 May 1860 There is a report of his remand hearing in the Staffordshire Advertiser, Saturday 26 May 1860, p.7 col.5: Juvenile Delinquents. - Three lads, named Enoch Mansell, 11, Richard Abberley, 12, and William Wheat, 12, were charged with being upon the premises of Mr. Swettenham, landlord of the Canning Inn, Fenton, for the purpose of committing a felony. Mr. Swettenham stated, in evidence, that he missed a bottle of whiskey from his cupboard about a week ago, and had frequently missed cigars and other articles. This morning, the prisoner Abberley went into the bar and told a charwoman whom he saw there that he wanted some water - the prisoner Wheat standing, at the same time, in the passage. Directly afterwards, both the lads were seen to leave the bar, the drawer of which it was found had been opened, and information being given to the police, the prisoners were apprehended by Inspector Stuart. They then admitted having gone into the house for the purpose of robbing the till, and began to accuse each other of having stolen the bottle of whiskey referred to. Mr. Garnham stated that Wheat had been continually before the magistrates for several years past, and Abberley had only just come out of gaol. Mansell, who was stated to be not so bad as his fellow prisoners, was discharged ; the other two were remanded for a week.
2 June 1860 There is a short report of their trial in the Staffordshire Advertiser Saturday 2 June 1860 p.7 col.6: Juvenile Offenders Richard Abberley and William Wheat, the two lads remanded last week on a charge of stealing a bottle of whiskey from the Canning Inn, Fenton, were again brought up. Wheat, who had been before the magistrates at least eight times for his pilfering practices, told the police that Abberley was the biggest thief, and had taught him to steal. They were sentenced to 21 days' imprisonment, and afterwards to be transferred to a reformatory for four years each.
7 June 1860 The Reformatory Minute Book reported: Mr Morgan laid applications before the Committee for the admission of three boys: Abberley, Wheat [boy 173], and Palmer [boy 180], and a letter from Mr Ratcliff as to admissions without any promise of payment by parents.
Resolved: that the applications with respect to the three boys in question be approved, and that they be admitted accordingly.
15 September 1860 There is a short report of his mother being summoned for non-payment of maintenance in the Staffordshire Sentinel and Commercial and General Advertiser Saturday 15 September 1860 p.6 col.2: NON-PAYMENT TOWARDS THE SUPPORT OF CHILDREN IN REFORMATORIES. - Alice Abberley, a widow in poor circumstances, appeared in answer to a summons against her at the instance of the Under-Secretary of State at the Home Department, to show cause why she did not contribute towards the support of her son, a boy now confined in the Reformatory at Saltley. Mr Garnham said he had made enquiries as to the woman's circumstances, and had leant that she was supported by her daughters, and had herself no means of getting a living - much less of contributing to the support of the boy.
