The war diary for 15th Division Ammunition Column does not list casualties and gives only sketchy details regarding location. There is not an entry for 1st May 1917 and all we can find is that they were somewhere in the Arras area when Thomas was killed.

The following is an extract from the Story of the Warwickshire Regiment by C.L. KINGSFORD

On 11 Apr 1917 the 1st Battalion were in the lines at Fampoux and were ordered to attack Plouvain in support of Royal Irish Fusilers whilst the Household Battalion attacked towards Greenland Hill on their left. There were many casualties from shell-fire before starting and the attack was almost at once checked by the enemy's machine-guns. The 1st Battalion had advanced till they found the leading battalion held up. Then, since the fire from the Chemical Works and Railway Embankment (see below) made further progress impossible Major Sir G. Lacon (who was in command that day) ordered a line to be consolidated and at nightfall had established his battalion with the Royal Irish Fusiliers on the right and Household Battalion on the left.

The failure to achieve more was due partly to the fact that the brigade has been practically in the view of the enemy as it came up to the assembly and partly due to the heavy barrage which the Germans at once put down. The battalion remained in their advanced position till April 13th and were in support for a week longer. The losses from the 9th to 20th April were 50 killed, including Colin and 213 wounded or missing.

Herbert's service record shows that he was admitted to Parkhurst Military Hospital, Isle of Wight, on 1 Nov 1918 suffering from acute double pnuemonia following influenza (Spanis Flu). He died the following day at 10.30am from heart failure.

Circumstances of Death

George is listed as being killed in action on 23rd March 1918, the Battalion War Diary is missing the section covering the whole of March 1918.

What we do know is that on 21 Mar 1918 the Germans mounted a huge spring offensive and George died 2 days later. A passage from the book the Story of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment by C.L. Kingsford mentions the 10th Battalion and is transcribed below.

"The experience of the 10th Royal Warwickshire was not less arduous or prolonged on the morning of March the 21st they were in camp near Basatre, but in the afternoon was sent forward to a position N.E. of Velu. That day the enemy had taken Lagnicourt and Doignes. At nightfall the 10th Royal Warwickshire was put under the 154^th Brigade of the 51^st Division. Orders were to hold to the last. For them the next day was only one of constant shelling but elsewhere the line was being gradually forced back. On the 23rd in the morning the Germans broke through at Beaumetz, one unit after another was forced to give ground but the royal Warwickshire not till afternoon. Even then Captain J. R. Gribble [VC], with his company on the right would not yield. His orders were to hold on and he did not withdraw, though he might easily have done so when the rest of the battalion was forced back to the secondary position.

When his right flank was in the air owing to the withdrawal of the neighbouring troops, he sent a runner to the left with a message that he would stay till ordered to retire, this resolution he inspired his men to accomplish, and when last seen he was still fighting [he was then actually taken prisoner], surrounded by the enemy at close range. By his splendid example Captain Gribble was instrumental in preventing for some hours the enemy from obtaining a complete mastery of the crest of the ridge, and by his own magnificent self sacrifice he enabled the remainder of his own brigade to be withdrawn. His heroism won him the Victoria Cross".

In short the battalion were in the lines to the South and South East of Beaumetz (blue pins) as the German army continued its massive attack (Spring Offensive - Operation Michael) on allied lines. Despite attempting to hold out the Germans broke throught the lines to their left (west) and went through Beaumetz and then captured Velu Wood and Lebucquiere (red pins). The battalion was forced to withdraw towards Bertincourt (blue pin) and once there was ordered to march to Bancourt (blue pin). These actions took place between 2am and 7pm.

Charles is listed as dying of wounds on 19 Dec 1917. It is not possible to tell from the Brigade war diary when he was wounded and his Service Record did not survive the records office fire during WW2.

We know that for the perioed 1st to 19th Dec 1917 the Battery were in the area of Buigny where Charles is buried.
