  • Fredercick had recovered from being wounded in the shoulder at Ploogsteert on 18 Oct 1915 and was returned to his unit in France on 20 Jan 1916.

Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

Robert is listed as dying of wounds on 18 May 1918. He service records shows that he died at the 13th Casualty Clearing Station at Arneke. The war diary indicates (but not confirmed) that he was wounded on 15 May 1918 near Ledegem as that is the only day that the diary mentions casualties. The war diary for the 15th is transcribed below.

May 15: - Training etc. Enemy shelled vacinity of the camp with H.E. shells causing 14 casualties. END

Circumstances of Death

Edgar was admitted to the 17th General Hospital in Alexandria on 7 May 1915 with a gunshot wounds to the shoulder, back and chest and he died there 12 days later on 19 May 1915.

The chain of casualty evacuation at Gallipoli is explained here and briefly was that after being wounded a casualty would be taken to a Regimental Aid post for wound dressing then onto a Casualty Clearing Station, normally on a beach, and then taken onboard one of the 56 or so Hospital Ships used in the Gallipoli Campaign. The journey from the moorings at Gallipoli to Alexandria took three and a half days and so, as Edgar was admitted to hospital in Alexandria on 7th May, the latest he would have been wounded was the 3rd May and most likely well before then. The war dairy for the XV Brigade is transcribed below from the 26th April when Y Battery disemabarked at Sedd el Bahr until 6th May 1915 and we have concluded that Edgar was wounded on the 1st May.

26 IV 1915 - 12.20pm: Arrived at Sedd el Bahr, Turkey

27 IV 1915 - 1pm: Brigade begins to disembark with the G.S. Wagons or Mules

28 IV 1915 - 1pm: Battery carries out disembarkation

29 IV 1915 - 11am: Battery concludes disembarkation 

30 IV 1915 - 1pm: Came into action 1½ miles N.E. of Sedd el Bahr
                  6pm: Battery fired first rounds to register zone

1. V. 1915 - 6am: Fired on enemy's infantry
          11.20am: Infantry in front of battery attacked and driven in. Battery opened fire at 12.15am and ? ? the action, firing until noon on 2. V. 15. Four men wounded, 4 horses killed and seven wounded

3. V. 1915 - 7pm: Withdrew into Bivouac about 1 mile SW, guns in position ready for action

5. V. 1915 - 11.30am: Major Rick rejoined after an absence of about a month at a time when many difficult operations had to be carried out. All these were put through without a hitch by Lieutenant Peveral.

6. V. 1915 - 7.30am: Advanced to new position 169Q, about 1½ miles N.E.

  • Edgar was the second generation of his family to join the Artillery with his father and uncle also serving in the Royal Artillery.
  • Edgar's connection to Ettington is that he married Elizabeth Ann Rust, sister of Thomas Randall Nason who is also listed on the
    Ettington War Memorial, in Warwick. XV Brigade, RHA was formed in Leamington Spa in January 1915 before embarking for Gallipoli
    in March 1915

Circumstances of Death

Charles is listed as being killed in action on 21 Mar 1918, the first day of the German Spring Offensive. His remains were never recovered and he is remembered on the Pozieres Memorial. The 5th Battalion war diary entry for the period 20th to 22nd March 1918 is transcribed below.

20-3-1918 near Le Fay Farm: Wet day. Battn provided working parties at Le Fay Farm. Front exceptionally quiet “Precautionary Action” received at 4.30pm

21-3-1918 near Le Fay Farm: Misty morning. ACTION – 6.5am. Battn moved up to Battle Zone under command of Major Labouchere. A and D Companies lose very heavily from shell fire. Enemy reach Battle Zone about 11.30am. Front posts lost, having been obliterated with occupants by shell fire. Second line held in front of Brigade Headquarters along Benay-Essingny road. Some hand to hand fighting , 8 prisoners taken.

Enemy massing in Lambay Wood and Essigny all afternoon. Line abandoned at night, all British troops retire behind canal at Flavy

Casualties: Officers: 2 klilled; 3 wounded and 3 missing and about 180 other ranks casualties.

22-3-1918 at Petit Detroit: Battalion arrives at Petit Detroit about 5.30am. Awaiting orders to move forward. Canal bank held. All details there under Lt. Money and 2/Lts Cresswell and Cooke. Col Sebastian joins battalion about 10pm.

Circumstances of Death

Joseph is listed as dying of wounds on 28 Aug 1918 and he was buried at Daours Cemetery. The battalion took part in attacks on enemy lines near Longueval and Delville Wood on 23rd, 24th, 25th, 27 and 28th Aug 1918 and it is believed that Joseph was wounded on one of those days. He would have died at one of the Casualty Clearing Stations that used Daours for burials at that time, they were the 5th, 37th, 41st, 53rd, 55th and 61st that were stationed at Veqcuemont and Daours.

Circumstances of Death

Bertie is listed as being killed in action on 14 July 1916. The 2nd Battalion war diary entries for the period 13th & 14th July 1916 are transcribed below.
 
12th July: Battalion in Citadel Line.
 
13th July - Citadel Line: The whole Division moved forward. The Battalion bivouacked in Mametz Wood at 3am on the morning of the 14th, the 20th Brigade attacked the German second line trenches. The 22nd Brigade followed up 2nd Bn R War R leading. The Battalion left the eastern corner of Mametz Wood at 4.30am passed over the German front line trench & reformed south of Bazentin-le-Grand wood. From this point the objective was Circus trench. C Coy went forward & took Circus Trench under very heavy fire.
 
D Coy followed up in support & started consolidating, then went on to assist Royal Irish Regt in Bazentin-le-Petit Wood who had severe fighting at close quarters driving the Germans out of the northern portion of the wood & village. The Company did splendidly being about 80 men. At 2.30pm the company reformed in Circus Trench with C Coy.
 
½ Coy of B Coy pushed in to the Bazentin-le-Petit + Bazentin-le-Grand Road, several casualties occurred from Machine Guns, then pushed on to Bazentin-le-Grand village the Coy kept up a running fight but not strong enough to dislodge the enemy. The Germans counter attacked but were driven back by B assisted by a few of A Coy. D Coy then went on & helped to consolidate the same line as A.
 

At about 8pm the whole Bn took up positions covering the south east of the village Bazentin-le-Petit, A & D Coys in the vicinity of the cemetery. B&C Coys NE of the village with patrols on the west of the village. All 4 Coys had a bad time shelled constantly but dug in & saved a great many by this prompt action in consolidating.

Kept this position all through 15th July. The battalion was relieved at 2am on 16th & bivouacked in Fritz Trench & remained there till the 19th inst when 2 Coys occupied the trench to the east of Bazentin-le-Petit & 2 Coys remained in support. Headquarters staying in Marlboro Wood.

The whole Division moved out on the evening of the 20th & the Battalion proceeded to Bivouacks at Dernacourt.
